The Dr. Edmund Klein Collection of Dali Dedicatory Drawings is one of only three such extensive, personal collections we're aware of that feature multiple, dedicated Dali sketches created for a single individual -- in this case for the late Dr. Edmund Klein, who was awarded the prestigious Lasker Award in medicine for his pioneering work in skin cancer research and treatment.
The late Dr. Klein met privately with Salvador Dali on various occasions over a 10-year period -- in New York, Paris, and Port Lligat, Spain -- treating and consulting with Dali, and enjoying a growing personal friendship with the Master artist. Dali came to think of Dr. Klein as his "Guardian Angel," even noting that fact on some of the drawings' inscriptions. Indeed, Dali executed some 15 individual drawings and sketches for Dr. Klein -- in books, on a catalog, and on sketchpads. Also included in the collection is a silver Dali sculpture from The Clot Collection, and a lithograph inscribed to Dr. Klein by Dali's secretary-manager, Enrique Sabater.
A slide show of the Klein Collection -- a collection shown publicly for the first time in the summer of 2009 at the U.B. Anderson Gallery of the State University of New York at Buffalo -- can be seen at the link below:
